Taipei, Dec. 22 (CNA) Starting next July, local drink shops will no longer be allowed to provide single-use foam plastic cups including those made of styrofoam, as part of a government effort to limit ocean pollution, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said Wednesday.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) yesterday proposed a ban on polystyrene foam single-use cups used in the food service industry.
Hsieh Ping-hui (謝炳輝), the executive secretary of the EPA Recycling Fund Management Board, told a news conference at the agency that the regulations would accelerate the phaseout of polystyrene foam in commercial venues nationwide.
The EPA in a statement said that the proposed ban is authorized under the Waste Disposal Act (廢棄物清理法).
Should the proposed regulations go into effect as planned, polystyrene foam cups would be banned at all beverage shops from July 1 next year, the agency said.

Establishments offering on-site dining starting this month must recycle used paper tableware and promote the measure to customers, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said.
The new regulation, which was announced in June and went into effect on Friday, requires vendors to provide diners with paper tableware and set aside an area with clear signage using Taiwan’s logo for recycling for customers to leave their used trays, plates, bowels and other items, the agency said in a statement.
