Kiwi politicians are returning to work for 2021, and it s about bloody time, according to straight-talking North Otago farmer Jane Smith. I ve been interested to see there s no sign of life yet in Wellington after – what is it – a two-and-a-half-month break? Smith told The Country s Jamie Mackay.
According to Smith s rough calculations, there wasn t enough time left in the term for the Government to actually get something that resembles a policy-in-action done.
Smith believed this year would bring unforeseen consequences for the Government, due to inaction in 2020, saying a number of things - if not most things - weren t achieved, or even started.
Farmer-led petition to rewrite freshwater rules to close this weekend

The petition was organised by Groundswell NZ, a group which stemmed from a tractor trek in Gore in October expressing farmers feelings about the new regulations.
It had been signed by more than 1600 people, and Paterson hoped it would reach at least 2000 signatures.

Those who had not signed needed to consider if they wanted to be bound up in the whole consenting process and spend half their time doing that or stand with us and put up a bit of a fight , Paterson said yesterday.
Traffic warning: Busy roads expected as New Year s travel and summer exodus begins

Motorists are being warned to expect heavy traffic today as holidaymakers make their way around the country.
Those travelling north of Auckland are being advised the roads will be busy all day in various areas from 7am through to 8pm.
The busiest area in the Auckland region is on State Highway 1 around Puhoi, which NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi expects to be jam-packed from 7.30am until 8pm with people heading north.

One woman, travelling south on SH1, posted a near two-minute long video showing traffic backed up heading north waiting to get into the tunnel near Puhoi.
