Another Maui Community Correctional Center inmate tested positive for COVID-19, increasing the number of positive cases to two, the state Department of Public Safety reported Thursday.
Twenty-one inmates were in medical isolation after having direct contact with someone with COVID-19, and 75 inmates were on quarantine status while undergoing precautionary testing, the department reported.
No staff have reported testing positive for COVID, but two adult corrections officers remained on a precautionary 14-day quarantine due to possible exposure.
On Thursday, inmates appeared by videoconference from the Wailuku jail for court hearings in 2nd Circuit Court and Wailuku District Court.
The jail was working with the state Department of Health’s Maui District Health Office and Hawaii Army National Guard to implement mass testing of affected inmates and staff, the Public Safety department reported.

WAILUKU A Hana man was arrested last week after police reported finding drugs and other contraband in his vehicle.
Patrick Clark, 50, was charged with second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, prohibited possession of firearm ammunition, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, deadly weapons prohibited, keeping ammunition in an improper place and four counts of possessing drug paraphernalia.
Clark was arrested Jan. 13 after police stopped his vehicle, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said during Clark’s initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court. After asking for permission to search the vehicle, police recovered drugs and an air gun, Yoshimoto said.

WAILUKU Bail was increased to $10,000 for a man who allegedly pushed a barbecue grill into a store manager, then pushed a police officer to the ground before being arrested Friday in Kihei.
Maverick Lau, 29, of Kahului was charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
The manager was setting up the grill in the parking lot of Times Supermarket at 1310 S. Kihei Road when Lau allegedly tried to steal the grill, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said during Lau’s initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court.
When the manager grabbed the grill from Lau, he pushed it into her, causing the grill to fall, Yoshimoto said.

WAILUKU One traveler was sentenced to a 10-day jail term and another man agreed to return to the Mainland after the two arrived on Maui on flights from Los Angeles without proper COVID-19 tests this week.
Anthony Mendoza, 31, pleaded guilty Thursday to violating emergency proclamation rules.
He arrived at Kahului Airport at about noon Wednesday. Although he had a negative COVID test, it wasn’t from a trusted state testing partner, said Deputy Prosecutor Rodney Char.
“The defendant also did not have a location to quarantine and refused to board a plane back to California,” Char said during a hearing for Mendoza in Wailuku District Court.

WAILUKU Bail was increased to $20,000 for a woman who was allegedly driving a stolen truck when she fled from police Monday.
Supiesi Tongi, 24, of Kihei was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to a vehicle or property, first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and second-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.
During her initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in Wailuku District Court, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The 2012 white Toyota pickup truck was reported stolen at about 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Haiku area, according to police.
