Destin Library patron passes on found money through bookmarks

The Destin Log After finding a $100 bill in the road while walking her dog, a regular patron of the Destin Library decided to use books to spread the good luck.  The patron, who asked to remain anonymous, was thrilled to find the $100, but wanted to pass on that “thrill of the find” to others.  So, she went to the bank and had them change the $100 into fives. She then brought the $5 bills to the Destin Library and asked if library workers could somehow anonymously hand them out to other patrons.  The library came up with the idea of making bookmarks and wrapping them with a $5 and a note that simply says, “Thanks to a generous donation by a grateful patron, we humbly give you this special bookmark.”

88-year-old Betty Marler of Destin crochets caps for vets and babies

“I can’t tell you just how we found out about them,” she said.  Anyhow, Marler would make the caps and her sister Jean would take them to a woman in Columbus, Georgia, who visited the veterans hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.  Since then, they have made a connection with a man who takes them to the Pensacola VA Clinic.  “My hats are all over the place,” she said.  “I don’t care where they send them as long as the veterans get them. I was told the veterans in the hospital that their heads get cold and they like to wear something on their heads,” Marler said.

Destin History and Fishing Museum adds four new board members

“I like helping in the community as much as I can,” he said.  And as part of the museum board, Noonan said he hopes to “help expand the exposure of the history and fishing museum to the community.”  I feel honored,” Noonan said of the opportunity to serve.  Belcher, who has volunteered at the museum in the past and helped on projects such as the restoration of the Primrose and the old Post Office, is more than happy to serve.  The Primrose is one of Destin’s oldest fishing boats, built in 1925 and is on display at the museum.  By working on those projects, Belcher said he “developed an appreciation” for Destin’s efforts to preserve so many artifacts.

Volunteer Spotlight: Georgena Duncan - Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Volunteer Spotlight: Georgena Duncan   Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in Fayetteville, attending University of Arkansas. I received a Fulbright scholarship from the University of Liverpool, England. I then stayed and completed my PhD, and traveled over England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium. Jobs were scarce in the early 1970s as the Vietnam War wound down. I taught at Oregon State, worked as an affirmative action officer at Arkansas Tech, then as a professor of history, and finally Dean of Arts and Humanities. I’m now retired, living in Fayetteville, and supporting my mother who lives here as well.
