North County Parents Plan Protest Urging Oceanside, San Marcos to Fully Reopen Schools

Updated 4 hours ago NBC Universal, Inc. North County parents and students pushing for a full reopening of in-person instruction at two school districts plan to gather Monday morning to rally for their cause. Several parents have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with San Marcos and Oceanside Unified School Districts’ timeline and capacity on reopening classrooms and have held protests in the past voicing their concerns. They say the slow reopening process has hindered their children’s academic and mental health while they’ve been learning remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. North County parents unite to form group to expedite school reopening

Print Parents of students in five local school districts have joined forces to form the Parent Association of North County San Diego, to advocate for students’ needs amid the pandemic and beyond. They organized in response to protracted school closures that began in March, with parents asking themselves how they could expedite the move from distance learning back to campus, said Ginny Merrifield, one of the organization’s founders. “How can we influence decision-making so that kids can choose to go back to school now,” she said. “Out of that conversation, we needed to realize that we need to share our resources and our stories, and put a lens on the decisions to put students first.”
