BMC plans global tender to buy 1.5 crore vax doses | Mumbai News

Cricketer Virat Kohli (left) after after receiving his dose on Monday MUMBAI: The BMC plans to float a global tender for procurement of 50 lakh vaccines in a bid to speed up its vaccination drive. The erratic supply of doses has slowed down immunisation in Mumbai, affecting potential beneficiaries of first as well as second shots. BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal told TOI he has received a go-ahead from chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to procure stocks for the country’s financial capital. Chahal said the authorities are open to a deal with any approved vaccine manufacturer that comes forward. Apart from Covaxin and Covishield, the civic body will consider Sputnik V, which was developed in Russia and accorded emergency use authorisation in India. It will also consider vaccines developed by Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.

Mumbai: Cash-strapped BMC to shell out Rs 1.6cr to rent e-cars for 8 years | Mumbai News

BMC head office MUMBAI: At a time when the BMC is facing an acute shortage of funds and has had to dip into its reserves, it plans to spend Rs 1.6 crore on renting brand new electric cars for its civic leaders. Instead of buying new e-cars, the BMC has decided to rent these for a period of eight years. By renting the vehicles for eight years, the BMC will end up paying around Rs 32 lakh per car more than double the market price of around Rs 14 lakh for each. TimesView Civic netas must get new cars if their vehicles are very old. The BMC, though, must not spend double the amount on renting cars, when the vehicles’ market price for outright purchase is 50% lower. Given the BMC’s current financial situation, when it has been forced to take an internal loan, the civic body must avoid such fancy spending and maintain austerity.
