Judicious use of the available manpower and infrastructure, increasing the number of doctors with specialisation in General Medicine and utilising the services of PG students and junior doctors may result in improvement in services at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), according to sources in the hospital.
The number of doctors at VIMS, which was a mere 25 till recently, was increased to about 100, following pressure from various quarters. However, the number of specialists with General Medicine, required to treat COVID-19 patients, is still in a single digit. BJP State president Somu Veerraju has urged Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to set up more medical oxygen plants at the earliest, procure Remdesivir injections with the government’s own resources, increase the beds in hospitals and improve services at major hospitals such as the King George Hospital (KGH) and Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) on a war-footing to tackle the second wave of coronavirus pandemic.

An official of the Industries department laughed off the suggestions of a shortage of medical oxygen in the city. The liquid medical oxygen (LMO) produced at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) alone is enough to meet the needs of not just Visakhapatnam but of entire Andhra Pradesh, it is said.
However, the ground reality seems different. Some designated COVID hospitals are pressing the panic button hinting that their oxygen stock may dry up any moment and snuff out the lives of COVID-19 patients dependent on oxygen support. Relatives of patients allege that the position is bad even at the government hospitals and patients are being made to wait outside till a bed, with oxygen supply, is vacated.

A sharp rise in the number of active COVID-19 cases in the city has turned the spotlight on the availability of medical oxygen at hospitals.
While there is no shortage of liquid medical oxygen, some issues with the distribution process and shortage of empty oxygen cylinders is said to be the reason behind the non-availability of beds with oxygen supply at hospitals.

Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Minister K. Kannababu said that hospitals treating COVID-19 patients should have a responsible action plan, maintain good sanitation and should have help desks for the convenience of patients and their family members. The hospitals should also have a special officer and public relations officer for proper communication. The managements should also facilitate treatment for patients coming for admission in emergency situations, he said.
