The House Republican leadership recently released its “Standards for Immigration Reform,” which amount to little more than a repackaging of the flawed and harmful Senate bill.
with the legal system of immigration that s broken. we have to fix the dreamer situation, we have to fix the agricultural visa system. congress and the president need a solution. what they re doing is not helpful, but they re just trying to amplify their messages and points, score political points. they re trying to make hay out of this politically, and maybe they are with the base, but it doesn t solve the problem. here s what i think is important that folks at home should know. charlie is a republican and brings up a very good point. talking about sensible solutions to this. rather than a political talking point for the midterms or for someone trying to make political gain out of this b which is what we often hear from analysts and contributors here on cnn, you re talking real issues, real ways to if i can it, and that s what we should be doing rather than saying, this is what s going to make a difference for republicans or democrats come
hundred haitian migrants living under a bridge for heavens sake. but by the same token putting people on buses and sending them up into the interior of the country without a plan isn t a solution either. but this does cry out for a real solution. and i served on the homeland security for six years, don. i can tell you i dealt with some of these issues. they need more detention beds, more immigration judges, more access on the legal border. we have to fix this situation. we have to fix the agricultural visa system. congress and the president really need a solution, and they all have to be part of this and have to include these governors. what they re doing sending these migrants out are not helpful. they re trying to make hay out of this politically and maybe they are with the base but it doesn t solve the problem. here s what i think is important folks at home should know. charlie s a republican and
legislators here in the u.s. to create some type of visa system for workers that want to come into the u.s. we have a labor shortage, he s argued, and we have people that want to come into this country who end up finding jobs. so he s asked the american congress to figure out a way to create a visa for these low skilled workers and you would solve some of these issues perhaps. maybe people wouldn t be taking these risks to come into the country because ultimately what most want to do is work in the united states, but it s a very complex problem. you also need some type of humanitarian effort in places like texas with high temperatures. something to help a lot of these people taking the risk. it s a complex problem that requires a complex solution, andrea. not a bumper sticker problem at all. thank you very much. and that does it for this edition of andrea mitchell reports. follow us online on facebook and
