In the fall of 1983, I took a one semester seminar titled “Creative Land Development” at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design taught by noted land use consultant Robert A. Lemire.
The project involved creating living shorelines along the Chickahominy River and Gordon Creek sides of the park, including beach nourishment and breakwaters on the west side of the park along the river, and marsh creation and stabilization on the north side along the creek.
MARTINSVILLE, Va. â The Southern Virginia Land Conservancy, our regionâs local land conservation non-profit, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment.
The Land Conservancy will use the funds to help local rural landowners permanently protect their farms and forestland with conservation agreements. Landowners who protect their land may still farm, timber and do most rural activities on the land, but canât develop it intensively. Landowners are usually eligible for state tax credits and federal tax deductions for conserving their land.

The North Fork of the Roanoke River traverses Montgomery County. Its meandering beauty won it a designation as a National Rural Historic District.
But multi use water ways don’t repair themselves, and the wear and tear from all kinds of activities, takes its toll.
It can cost thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, even millions in some parts of the state, to protect the water and keep it clean.
“And a lot of times what happens is the landowner starts to realize that they’re losing a lot of topsoil,” says Mike Pinder is an aquatic biologist with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. “And a lot of the stream is cutting away in sections and large sections of the property are falling into the Creek and washing away.”
