How these seminarians in New Orleans plan to celebrate Mardi Gras

Fr. Jim Wehner and seminarians from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans celebrate Mass along the route of the Endymion parade. (Courtesy of Notre Dame Seminary) Denver Newsroom, Feb 14, 2021 / 02:00 am (CNA).- Mardi Gras in New Orleans has been canceled only a handful of times, including during World War I and II, and the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. This year will be added to that list, as the mayor of New Orleans has canceled Mardi Gras because of the coronavirus pandemic. But seminarians at Notre Dame Seminary are still planning to celebrate Mardi Gras, in their own way. “I can’t have everybody go home and then come back again, as we’re trying to keep the virus out of the seminary. Which means everybody has to stay here,” said rector Fr. Jim Wehner. “So we’re going to do our own celebrations.”

Three lives, one message: Stop killing Mexico's transgender women

BBC News By Will Grant image captionAriel Hernandez Serrano hopes her music brings visibility to the trans community in Mexico City Mexico is the second most dangerous country in the world to be transgender, according to human rights groups. Only Brazil has higher rates of transphobia and violence against the trans community. Most attacks go unpunished, including murder. Three women are fighting for change. In a small paved patio beneath a bust of the Virgin de Guadalupe, Ariel Hernandez Serrano s lilting voice echoes across her rundown corner of Iztacalco, the most densely-populated borough in Mexico City. Accompanied only by a classical guitarist, she performs a poignant rendition of a Mexican folk song, La Llorona, meaning The Weeping Woman.
