Shes best known for her autobiography i know why the caged bird sings. She was a master of words who spoke several languages. In africa she taught drama, she danced and marched for civil rights with malcolm x and Martin Luther king. When the latter was assassinated on her 40th birthday, she was devastated. But first and foremost, she was a poet. Over the years she was a frequent guest on pbs. Her first appearance on my program came in 1993, after she recited her poem on the pulse of the morning at president clintons first inauguration.
