Dungeons & Dragons: Van Richten s Guide to Ravenloft Provides a New Take on a Beloved Campaign Setting
✖
Van Richten s Guide to Ravenloft is not only a major update to the world of Ravenloft, it also presents an interesting approach to building
Dungeons & Dragons adventures that could mark a major shift in the ethos of D&D publications. In 1983, Tracy and Laura Hickman introduced the gothic horror-laced world of Ravenloft to
Dungeons & Dragons. While Ravenloft was originally created to hold the iconic D&D vampire Strahd von Zarovich, the world eventually expanded to include a patchwork collection of Demiplanes of Dread, each of which served as an eternal prison for some sort of foul creature. The current Fifth Edition set of rules for
Dungeons & Dragons is taking the fantasy tabletop genre in a horrifying direction with
Van Richten s Guide to Ravenloft, the upcoming sourcebook that more fully introduces the classic Ravenloft setting into the game s Fifth Edition. Ravenloft, which first appeared in
D&D lore back in the 80s, is a mystical realm that s not a real place so much as it s a collection of various horrifying Domains of Dread. The new book features several Domains, new and old, all of which highlight different aspects of horror folk horror, cosmic horror, psychological horror, and much more. SYFY WIRE has an exclusive preview of one Domain, Lamordia, a snowy land in which a diabolical scientist stitches unwilling bodies together.
Ravenloft is one of
Dungeons & Dragons’ most iconic settings its go-to source for all things spooky and horrifying. But, as iconic as figures like Strahd Von Zarovich and the gothic lands of Barovia are, they’re only one flavor of horror the plane has to offer. A new
D&D campaign sourcebook wants to open up new avenues for the genre on our tabletops.
