Photo courtesy Office of the Prime Minister - With 328 more people infected with the covid19 virus and with a tally of 10,000 infections since last March, the Prime Minister on Thursday announced an immediate clampdown on social activities as of midnight. He was addressing a media briefing at the Victor E Bruce building in Tobago on Thursday afternoon. Saying it was his job to protect people s health, he announced measures to curb the spread of the virus decided on after consultation and in light of the rising number of cases. As of midnight all restaurants and bars will be closed.

This will be Dr Rowley s first such briefing since emerging from isolation after contracting covid19. He spent the period from April 6 to his recovery on April 26 in isolation at the PM s official residence in Blenheim, Tobago, under the care of medical professionals from the Tobago Regional Health Authority. This morning the PM reportedly chaired a meeting on covid19 with the ministries of Health and National Security. Yesterday 223 new covid19 cases were recorded in Trinidad and Tobago.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh announced further restrictions to address the spike in covid19 cases. The Government, among other measures, has banned public gatherings for entertainment and concerts and also reimplemented a 50 per cent staff rotation system within the public service. Beaches remain closed while in-house dining at restaurants and cinemas are prohibited.
