Portugal's Jeronimo Martins quarterly profit jumps 66% amid COVID lockdown

By Reuters Staff 1 Min Read LISBON, April 28 (Reuters) - Portugal’s retailer Jeronimo Martins said on Wednesday its first-quarter net profit rose 66% on a modest rise in sales that was driven by its key market Poland amid lockdowns due to a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic there and at home. As net profit jumped to 58 million euros ($70.11 million), Portugal’s second-largest retailer still warned that “there is still uncertainty about the possible implementation of further confinement measures and the effect of these measures on consumer behaviour in the countries where we operate”. Sales in the January-March period rose 1.5% to 4.8 billion euros, with a 3.9% rise in Poland offsetting a 0.8% drop at its main domestic supermarket chain Pingo Doce.

By Reuters Staff 2 Min Read LISBON, April 22 (Reuters) - Portugal’s ailing state-owned airline TAP on Thursday posted an annual loss of 1.2 billion euros ($1.44 billion) as passenger numbers fell by almost three quarters last year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global travel. The airline received a 1.2 billion-euro rescue loan in 2020 from the state, which holds a 72.5% stake, allowing it to keep operating and end last year with a cash position of about 520 million euros, TAP said. “Both the operation and the results in 2020 were severely impacted by the drop in activity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with passenger numbers falling 72.7%, after growing for four consecutive years,” the company said.

REUTERS/Toby Melville LISBON (Reuters) - Portugal on Monday extended a suspension of flights to and from Britain and Brazil until April 15, with only humanitarian and repatriation flights allowed, the interior ministry said in a statement. The country, which has so far reported 16,837 COVID-19 deaths and 820,407 cases, suspended flights to and from Brazil and the UK in January to prevent the spread of COVID-19 variants. The new variant initially discovered in Britain was partly responsible for a devastating surge in cases at the start of 2021, putting hospitals under crippling strain. The situation has drastically improved since then.
