Former Kane County state s attorney McMahon appointed to Metra board Joe McMahon Updated 5/14/2021 1:53 PM Former Kane County State s Attorney Joe McMahon is the county s newest appointment to the Metra board of directors. The decision comes despite criticism from several county board members about the process, McMahon s qualifications and his tenure as state s attorney. The county board voted 19-4 Tuesday there is one vacant seat on the 24-member board to make the appointment. McMahon was one of 18 applicants for the position, which comes with a $15,000 stipend.   A subcommittee overseeing and vetting the applications narrowed the pool to four finalists for interviews. Three of the four would have been worthy appointments, said county board member Drew Frasz. Frasz sat on the subcommittee along with county board members Vern Tepe and Mo Iqbal, and Carl Scheidel, the county s executive director of transportation.

Kane County to receive another $103 million in federal COVID assistance Bill Lenert Posted4/1/2021 1:00 AM The federal American Rescue Plan will put another $103.3 million in Kane County s coffers to help address the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but county board members are already split on the best ways to use it. The county should receive the first payment of $51.6 million in April, with a second payment for an identical amount possibly as soon as April 2022. Early guidelines call for it to be spent by the end of 2024.   However, the final spending deadline for funds made available through the previous rescue plan, the CARES Act, proved to be fluid. For example, Kane County still has $643,000 in CARES Act money despite an initial spending deadline of Dec. 31, 2020.

However, even people who can get shots now continue to show a reluctance to get them, county officials said Wednesday.   Board member Jarett Sanchez, who chairs the committee that oversees the local health department, told fellow board members that about 50% of the municipal police officers refused the vaccine when it was offered to them as part of the opening of Phase 1B. He added quite a few detainees at the county jail, which has seen multiple outbreaks, also have refused it.
