“There is a problem with the way that sheriffs are doing their jobs in our state,” said Sen. Ruth Hardy, D-Addison, a sponsor of the bill. “We need to do something besides a study.”
Under the proposed bill, sheriffs would no longer be able to take administration fees for their department’s contract work with private and public entities. Currently, they are able to take up to 5%.
Their recommendations, presented to the Senate Government Operations Committee, include whistleblower protections, limits on bonuses and an oversight commission.
