on the day that newtown happened he had access to a game where he could go into a school and shoot people in a video gail. it doesn t make sense. one of the things that s interesting of the role the vice president has played in the administration and the campaign and is very much true in respect to guns, is, as a kind of validator, if you re engineering the campaign for a man named barack obama to be the president of the united states, you have this obvious issue which is most guys don t know somebody named barack obama. he doesn t look like a lot of voters. joe biden is kind of quintessentially like next door neighbor material. i thought this clip was interesting in 2008, here s joe biden being that kind of validator for voters on specifically, this issue of gups. take a look. i guarantee you, barack obama ain t taking my shotguns. so don t buy that malarkey. don t buy it. they re going to start pedalling that to you. i got two.
why? the reason is, and they point out in their endorsement. the president had the opportunity to make it change he said he would bring to america. he wasn t bipartisan. we are harnging back to 2009 when he became our president. he had a democratic house and senate with high majorities. he wasn t able to get one democrat to vote for his own budget. the disappointment is there. the major newspapers picked up on the fact what the president promised he hadn t delivered. we are no better off today than we were when he took office. the endorsements are cumulative. the validator for people look fog make the change. megyn: the latest rasmussen report poll in iowa shows dead even 48-48. it s incredible how this race is tightening up as we go into the final week. i want to ask you, normally it s like so and so endorsed so and so. does it say anything to you,
so a lot of people around clinton who say president obama is going to go back and try to get the grand bargain done on tax reform and who s a better validator for that? there s no one who can sell to a skeptical democratic party the virtues of deficit reduction, of what a balanced budget would mean for allowing there to be investment in cherished democratic programs. he s the guy. he s the guy who made public investments while balancing the budget, while bringing a surplus on. a lot of skittish democrats would look to bill clinton as a validator. the very first thing bill clinton did with medicare was cut it. and we just got word today from the treasury that it looks like the debt ceiling will ripen right in the middle of january. they re going to need to raise
martha: mary ann, it is of note he is slipping in the polls with women, president obama. michelle obama needed to do more last night than maybe everybody feel good about her husband and speak about him as his wife and his, person who has been by his side all this time. she needs to better those numbers with women. well, and she did just that. remember every election is about trust. but people aren t going to trust you unless they like you first. michelle obama last night did all of those things. she reminded people why you like barack obama so of. she reminded people that they are middle class, working class families just like them and came up the same weigh people are living today. at the same time reminded everybody that mitt romney is none of those things. so to that degree michelle obama with her own personal rating so much higher on that the president s has tremendous credibility being validator for barack obama. she hit it out of the park last night on everyone of those scores.
you can agree with it or not, but they are ambitious. a lot of people find that courageous on the right. obviously a lot of people on the left find it scary. so it s a validator for him, but it also underscores how i think the new york times described this, how people in the party see mitt romney as a transitional figure. even if he wins, that maybe he s just someone who represents a bridge from where the party was to where it s going to. and paul ryan i think for a lot of republicans and conservatives represents where the party is going to. how about the debates, might those be energizing to get people up off the couch? i think the debates are actually much more likely than the conventions to get people focused on who these people are and what the choice really is. that s the last window of this. and that dominates october. there s only one other event that s really going to affect things, the debate in october, and that s going to be mitt romney s tax returns.
