Alleged trade-off of votes between BJP and UDF The CPI(M) has blamed trade-off of votes between the BJP and the UDF for the defeat of the LDF candidate in the Vadakara Assembly constituency. From the voting pattern, it goes without saying that the LDF may also have lost some of its traditional votes here.
Vadakara was among the only two seats that the front lost in the district when a Left wave swept across the State, ensuring a second term for the Pinarayi Vijayan government. The loss was even more troublesome for the CPI(M), as the winner was the wife of a dissident party leader, who was allegedly murdered on a May 4 nine years ago after he broke away to form a new party.

This is a maiden victory for a UDF-backed candidate in the segment
Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI) leader K.K. Rema’s victory from the Vadakara Assembly segment against her Left Democratic Front (LDF) rival and Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Manayath Chandran by a margin of 7,491 votes is historic on many counts.
First, the constituency in Kozhikode district bucked the general trend in the State in favour of the LDF by electing a United Democratic Front (UDF)-backed candidate. Second, this is only the second time a non-socialist nominee is being chosen by the electorate here except in 1957, when the undivided Communist Party of India’s M.K. Kelu won from here. Third, this is the first time a woman is getting elected as MLA from the segment. And this is also the maiden electoral victory for any UDF-backed candidate from Vadakara.

The Returning Officer for the Vadakara Assembly constituency has forwarded a complaint against K.K. Rema, United Democratic Front-backed Revolutionary Marxist Party candidate of the segment, to the Station House Officer, Vadakara police station, over the alleged bid to influence voters using pictures of the former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in the campaign material.
According to the official, the police would examine if there was any violation of the model code of conduct or attempt to disturb the law and order situation. Mr. Achuthanandan had visited Ms. Rema, widow of slain RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, on the day of the Assembly bypoll to the Neyyattinkara segment in 2012. It had damaged the Left prospects too.
