Controversial Transgender Athlete Sports Bill Clears First Legislative Hurdle
A controversial bill in Utah would ban transgender girls from playing on girls sports teams in public schools, or private schools that compete against public schools. It cleared its first legislative hurdle Thursday as the House Education Committee approved it 8-6. While inclusion is important in sports, it will come at the cost of fairness,” said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Kera Birkeland, R-Morgan. Critics of the bill, however, said it s unfair and discriminatory to exclude transgender girls from sports. Read the full story.

Food news: Fight hunger in Utah, take Eat Local Challenge
Taste of the Wasatch
Tickets are on sale for the annual Taste of the Wasatch, a benefit for Utahns Against Hunger, The Green Urban Lunch Box and 3 Squares Inc. More than 50 Utah chefs, restaurants and bakers will prepare bites for guests at Solitude Mountain Resort. The event, for those 21 and older, includes live music, beer and wine and a silent auction. Several restaurants will be returning to the event, including Avenues Proper, La Caille, Luna Blanca, Trio, Meditrina and Red Iguana. New participants include Harbor Seafood and Steak, Current Fish and Oyster, R and R BBQ, Porch, Taqueria 27, Bistro 222 and The Annex by Epic Brewing. Also, look for the dessert booth showcasing the sweet treats of 15 pastry chefs and bakers.

Families are camping out overnight before distribution days at the Utah Food Bank for fear the pantry will run out of food before they can get some.
