DOE awards IACMI $1.5 million grant for innovative uses of South Appalachian Coal Resources

Share this article Share this article KNOXVILLE, Tenn., May 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has tapped the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, or IACMI – The Composites Institute, to develop and deploy new technologies for manufacturing coal-derived products using coal resources near distressed South Appalachian coal communities. The $1.5 million grant awarded to IACMI will assist in the development of technologies to extract and produce critical minerals from both coal and coal ash in the South Appalachian Basin of east Tennessee, northwest Georgia and northern Alabama. Production of critical materials essential for clean energy projects, such as electric vehicle batteries, resilient buildings and infrastructure, can create jobs in coal and power plant communities.

Tennessee Showing Signs Of Economic Recovery - Chattanoogan.com

Tennessee Showing Signs Of Economic Recovery Wednesday, December 16, 2020 - by Erin Hatfield, UTK Larry Kessler, research associate professor in UT’s Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research and project director for the 2021 Economic Report to the Governor of the State of Tennessee Positive economic growth is expected over the next year for Tennessee, although it may be rocky and somewhat sporadic as the state digs out of the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The state’s economic forecast is explored in a report released Wednesday by the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but the cautiously optimistic outlook comes with a caveat.
