Usk Town Council tea party in the river for NHS staff

USK Town Council members may have caused passers by to double-take on Monday after they took part in a national event to show thanks to healthcare workers by having a tea party in the middle of the river Usk. Usk joined other towns across the UK to show their thanks to NHS staff and other key workers on the first annual NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers Day on Monday, July 5. This day was chosen as it was on this day in 1948 the NHS was formed, 73 years ago. The national organisers hope this will be an annual day of to give thanks and remembrance for key workers.

Traffic lights on Bridge Street, Usk to be removed

A spokesperson for the council said: “The easing of lockdown restrictions and the reopening of schools and businesses have resulted in increased traffic volumes in Usk and we have been aware of longer queue times and queue lengths along Bridge Street recently. We are concerned that with the increased traffic levels, the temporary lights are no longer operating effectively and have concluded that now is the right time to remove them. Although pollution levels remain well below trigger levels, we are also concerned that increased queue lengths could result in a potential impact on air quality.” “The pavements in Usk are narrow, so we will be reliant on residents and visitors to remember to maintain social distance wherever possible and, where this is not possible, to wear a mask.”

Tributes paid for former three-time mayor of Usk Jill Jeremiah

She set up an extra support group for youngsters with special needs, ably supported by local volunteers. Her two friends said: Jill s favourite event was the Late Late Christmas Show which started as a youth club project in 1987 and ran for 15 years. It ended up with many locals willing to take part (make fools of themselves), all for charity, and have a lot of fun as well. She also initiated the very popular annual duck race at the cricket club. What with cricket club tea duties and door-to-door collecting for poppies, it s a wonder she found time to instigate the council s reindeer parade and the Christmas market.
