Usdaw wants Government to protect shop workers from attacks

AFTER two of our mid-Cheshire MPs threw their weight behind a campaign to protect retail workers from attacks, the union representing them has also called on the Government to act. In recent weeks, both Esther McVey (MP for Tatton) and Mike Amesbury (MP for Weaver Vale) called on the Government to act to protect workers, after it was revealed attacks on shop workers had massively increased in the last year. Retail trade union Usdaw is part of a coalition with major retail businesses that is urging MPs to back an amendment to a flagship Government crime bill, which would offer frontline workers greater protection.

Retailers unite to call for Government to avoid a life sentence of violence and abuse for shopworkers – Retail Times

Published on A coalition which consists of more than 30 major retail businesses, are today (12 May, 2021) urging MPs to avoid shackling over three million shopworkers to a “life sentence” of violence, abuse and anti-social behaviour by encouraging them to back an amendment to a flagship Government crime bill which would offer frontline workers greater protection. The call for stiffer penalties for those committing assaults and attacks on shopworkers comes as a new report “Breaking the Cycle: Gaining the views of criminal justice practitioners and retail offenders on effective sentencing” is launched. The research – written by Dr Emmeline Taylor and funded through the Co-op’s Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities, campaign –  offers a response to the White Paper “A Smarter Approach to Sentencing and the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill”, and provides clear opportunities to encourage Government to legislate to protect and support shopworkers.

Usdaw tells MPs inquiry that shopworkers need legal protection, with nearly 9 in 10 retail staff abused last year

Retail trade union Usdaw has responded to a parliamentary inquiry into violence and abuse towards retail staff with a call for legislation to protect retail staff. Today the union released new statistics showing that nearly 9 in 10 shopworkers were abused last year. Last night the Scottish Parliament unanimously voted for a ground-breaking new law to protect shopworkers. Usdaw’s 2020 survey of 2,729 shopworkers across the UK found that: 88% experienced verbal abuse, 61% were threatened by a customer, The influential Home Affairs Select Committee launched their inquiry the day after  Usdaw secured over 100,000 signatures on a ‘protect shopworkers’ petition that should now trigger a parliamentary debate. Launched by shopworkers’ trade union leader Paddy Lillis, the petition is backed by 23 major retailers and the industry’s leading trade bodies, with research by the Co-op showing its aims have public support as well.

Usdaw calls for shop workers to be vaccinated

Usdaw calls for shop workers to be vaccinated RETAIL trade union Usdaw has renewed the call for key workers to be prioritised for vaccination, after the Government indicated they are looking at priority for the second phase and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) accepted that occupation is a factor. The union has made similar calls on the Scottish and Welsh Governments, along with the Northern Ireland Executive. Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the House of Commons that: “We’ll be looking very carefully at those professions that will need to be prioritised in phase two of the prioritisation programme. We’ll look at, of course, teachers and police and others, but also we will look at shopworkers and we will make those decisions based on the data”.
