(U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee) House Agriculture Committee Chairman David Scott delivered the following statement at today’s hearing on Climate Change and the U.S. Agriculture and Forestry Sectors: …
Our farmers, ranchers, and forest managers understand these risks, and they are the first to experience the pressures of a changing climate. But American producers are resilient, and many are already adopting production practices that not only improve productivity but store carbon and reduce emissions in the atmosphere. And yet there is tremendous opportunity to do more. It is incumbent on this Committee to ensure producers have the financial and technical resources they need to understand climate risks, consider mitigation strategies, and receive the support they need to make important investments in their operations.
Today I hosted a special hour long AM Minnesota Program Jerry s Top Five AG Stories For 2020. Special thank you to all of our sponsors. The top story was easy, the COVID-19 pandemic and it s affect on all of agriculture. The pandemic seemed to hit livestock producers especially pork producers the hardest. My guest for the top story was Dave Preisler Chief Executive Officer of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association.
My second story was the tremendous financial recovery for most farmers given how low grain and livestock prices were last spring. My guest was Ag Analyst and Vice President of MinnStar Bank Kent Thiesse from Lake Crystal.
The U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee will see history-making new leadership in the 117th Congress. The House Democratic Caucus elected Rep. David Scott, D-GA, to the position on Dec. 3. Scott will be the first Black chairman of the House Ag Committee, according to outgoing Chairman Collin Peterson, D-MN.
âHe will make a great chairman and Iâm proud to pass the reins to him,â Peterson said in a release. âAs a long-time House Ag member and leader, David knows very well the impact the committeeâs work has on the lives of farmers, ranchers, rural residents, and consumers in communities across the country. Iâm confident weâre all in good and capable hands.â
