COLUMBIA — Rapid population growth is driving the South Carolina governor to suggest more funding for infrastructure projects to keep pace with an influx of newcomers. The request is part of Republican Gov. Henry McMaster s budget proposal for the 2024 fiscal year, which he revealed Friday. Lawmakers will begin writing the budget after they convene for the new session next week. According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, South Carolina s 2023 population growth rate is higher than any other state. As such, McMaster wants to use $500 million in surplus funds to fix around 150 to 200 bridges throughout the state. Like previous proposals, his budget is heavy on education. That includes boosting starting teacher salaries to a minimum of $45,000.
