MOUNT HOLLY SPRINGS – A warm glow now rises above previously unmarked graves of 44 people who lay in rest in the Cedar Street Cemetery.
On Saturday, members of the Mt. Tabor Preservation Project and volunteers gathered at the historic African American cemetery to install solar lights on the graves that had no headstones.
It was the culmination of several years’ worth of work to memorialize a portion of the African American history of the post-Civil War era in this Cumberland County borough.

Two historic buildings are what remain of the more than 50 homes and other structures that compromised the Promise Land community of former slaves.
The descendants of those families are among the members of the Promise Land Heritage Association, which is currently focused on saving the nearly 90-year-old St. John Methodist Church at Promise Land.
“We want to offer the public new exciting, informative, and attractive programs, events and exhibits at the site,” said Serina Gilbert, chair of the association’s board of directors.
The group has launched a campaign for 2021 to help raise the $50,000 necessary to renovate the church building that once housed the St. John Methodist congregation. Originally constructed in the 1880s, the building served as a place of worship for members of the Methodist Episcopal congregation in Promise Land. It was the remaining building of three churches that once served the community settled by former slaves and veterans
