UNC defends statement on United States’ travel advisory

UNC MP for Oropouche East Dr Roodal Moonilal on Sunday doubled down on a statement made by the party in response to a travel advisory issued by the United States which advised against travelling to Trinidad and Tobago amid crime and covid19 concerns.
Moonilal, at a news briefing at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Port of Spain, said the areas listed in their statement were well known as “hotspots” and were in PNM strongholds.
“The US over the years have identified certain areas in this country that they advise their citizens, employees and workers not to go. And those areas are areas that have been represented for donkey years by the People’s National Movement.

Hosein: Criminal justice system falling down

Opposition MP Saddam Hosein has accused the government of having skewed priorities in the fight against crime as he called for a revamping of the criminal justice system and supporting institutions.
At the United National Congress’ virtual report on Monday, Hosein described the criminal justice system as falling down owing to a lack of political will and poor detection rate.
Referring to the sluggish pace of the Sean Luke murder trial and the collection of DNA evidence 15 years after the boy was killed, he said there were institutional challenges that new legislation would not solve.
Recounts in both THA and Local Government Bye-Elections
The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has received official requests for general recounts of the votes cast in five electoral districts.
In Tobago, the Progressive Democratic Patriots has requested recounts in the electoral districts of Canaan/Bon Accord, Lambeau/ Signal Hill and Scarborough/Calder Hall. The People’s National Movement has requested a recount in the electoral district of Bethel/Mt. Irvine.
In the Local Government Bye-Elections, the independent candidate Christopher Wright, who received 307 votes in the electoral district of Hollywood, requested a recount.
Election Rule 101(1) of the Representation of the People Act, Chapter 2:01 provides for, inter alia, political parties and/or independent candidates to request a recount into the votes cast, no later than twelve noon on the day after the election.
Social Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis
Planning and Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis, who had gallbladder removal surgery recently, is continuing to recuperate at home, the Office of the Prime Minister stated last night.
Robinson-Regis, 62, had surgery last week. She was recently discharged from the facility where she had the surgery.
Last week, the OPM had stated that she had surgery and she would be on extended leave. The OPM didn’t state what the surgery was for, leading to widespread speculation on her condition.
Last night, however, the OPM stated Robinson-Regis is now at home “resting comfortably after undergoing surgery for the removal of her gallbladder.”
