good day to our viewers in the u.s. and around the world. i m john avlon in for kasie hunt. it is wednesday, december 20th. 5:00 a.m. here in new york. 3:00 a.m. in denver where layers for donald trump have vowed to appeal a colorado supreme court ruling that could keep the former president off the 2024 ballot before state justices ruling 4-3 that trump is ineligible to be president under the 14th amendment because he engaged in an insurrection on january 6. the court put its ruling on hold until january 4 pending trump s planned appeal to the u.s. supreme court. an attorney for the plaintiff seeking to block trump says he thinks that they have decent odds at winning there. first of all, trump is going to have to convince the supreme court to take this case. and i can imagine a world in which the supreme court says this is pretty early on in the election cycle, let s see how it plays out in some other states first. so he is first going to have to convince the supreme court
begin this hour with trt cases that could have a major impact on the 2024 election, and with, it democracy itself. first, on friday, the supreme court denied special counsel jack smith s request to fast-track arguments over trump s claims that he s immune from being held accountable legally for his actions to overturn the 2020 election. trump basically claiming that he deserves to get out of jail free card because he took those actions while president. but this appeal over presidential immunity is likely far from over. a lower court will hear oral arguments in this case and just a few weeks. once the court rules the supreme court could decide n if it will take up the case. while this appeals process plays out, it could delay the start date for trump s election interference trial in washington d.c.. meanwhile, the supreme court will also likely have to surprise how to react to the decision from colorado s high court, damning trump ineligible to run for office, at least in colo
