Two years after the #MeToo movement took off in China, Chinese women’s rights activists face a political environment in which the Chinese Communist Party’s control over the internet, media, and independent activism is tighter than the previous 30 years.[1] Since the Chinese government prohibits collective actions, the country’s #MeToo movement has not been able to manifest in mass street protests. But individuals who have suffered abuse have taken their cases to court, demonstrating extraordinary determination and resilience.

Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Women and Girls by Soldiers (article 2)
Ugandan soldiers deployed in the Central African Republic have sexually exploited or abused at least 13 women and girls between 2015 and 2017, including at least one rape, and threatened some victims to remain silent. The Ugandan military was deployed in the country between 2009 and 2017 as a part of the African Union’s Regional Task Force to eliminate the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group.
Human Rights Watch interviewed a total of 13 women and 3 girls in early 2017, who described exploitation or abuse, including rape, since 2010 by Ugandan soldiers in the southeastern town of Obo, where Ugandan forces were based, and heard credible accounts of other cases. When Roxanna Carrillo came to work at the new United Nations peacekeeping mission in Burundi in September 2004, she knew she needed to clarify the standards of behaviour expected of personnel.
As head of the innovative code of conduct unit at the United Nations Operation in Burundi (ONUB), Carrillo has been responsible for training and monitoring the deportment of UN peacekeeping staff in the central African nation, where more than 200,000 people have died in ethnic violence since 1993.
Efforts to establish a power-sharing government are currently underway, but violence remains widespread, and the UN Security Council established a mission of nearly 6,000 troops in May 2004. In recent months Carrillo has regularly travelled by helicopter to speak to UN military and civilian personnel stationed in camps throughout the country.
