Charges: Man wanting to kill cop had guns, explosive materials, armor

Deseret News Share this story Stock image SALT LAKE CITY Guns, materials to make explosives and stolen police body armor was found in the home of a Vernal man who had stated he wanted to kill a police officer, according to court documents. Michael Dallas Rowley, 37, was charged Tuesday in 8th District Court with possession of explosive parts, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon by a restricted person and child endangerment, all third-degree felonies; drug possession, a class A misdemeanor; drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft by receiving stolen property, all class B misdemeanors. On Feb. 23, while investigating a possible assault, Uintah County Sheriff’s deputies learned that Rowley might have firearms and drugs inside his home, according to charging documents. Rowley is prohibited from having guns or ammunition due to prior convictions, the charges state.

Deseret News Share this story Adobe Stock image SALT LAKE CITY A Vernal man who police say had bomb making materials in his house and a bulletproof vest from a sheriff’s office in a hidden space was arrested in Uintah County. On Tuesday, Uintah County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault at a home. Deputies found an intoxicated man outside the house who claimed that Michael Dallas Rowley had threatened him with a .22-caliber rifle during an argument and “threatened to shoot him if he returned to the residence,” according to a police affidavit. The man told investigators that Rowley also had other firearms in the house, as well as “a hidden space beneath the residence in which he had possibly hidden other firearms. The subject described the hidden space and stated that it was accessed through a door that was hidden beneath the carpet in one of the bedrooms,” the affidavit states.
