Nagpur, Feb 7 (PTI) Parliament cannot “impose” the Uniform Civil Code on citizens as the Constitution gives a person religious freedom, said Dr B R Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar, who is the head of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), on Wednesday.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, aimed at establishing uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens regardless of their religion, was introduced in the Uttarakhand state assembly. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented the bill and entered the assembly with an original copy of the Constitution.
Word has it that the panel readied the report way back in June itself and has only been awaiting political clearance to submit it to the state government.
