But industry studies show they are also responsible for around 20% of the CO2 emitted – and fuel used – by a car or van. This is because when the tyre comes into contact with the road, it deforms which makes it heat up and some of the energy which would otherwise have been used to move the vehicle is lost, says Michelin. This phenomena is known as rolling resistance.
