SAN MARCOS (CNS) - An Escondido police officer was injured Saturday on state Route 78 when a vehicle lost a wheel and hit the police vehicle.
The collision happened about noon when a 40-year-old Vista woman was traveling westbound SR-78 in a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 pickup east of Twin Oaks Valley Road, said Juan Escobar of the California Highway Patrol.
For an unknown reason, the left rear wheel of her vehicle detached, went over the center median into the eastbound lanes and struck the Escondido Police Department s Ford Explorer Police Interceptor, Escobar said. The wheel damaged the police vehicle s roof and windshield.
By 3 p.m., San Marcos Fire Department said the forward rate of spread had been stopped and that evacuation warnings would be lifted. Units will remain on scene throughout the evening. A cause was not yet known.
No structures are believed to have been damaged by the fire but Palomar College said it burned about 11 acres of the Palomar San Marcos Campus nature preserve, including Diegan Coastal Sage that is severely threatened in the region, Palomar College President Dr. Jack Kahn. The arboretum, which contains hundreds of rare and endangered species, was spared. The college will work with the San Diego Habitat Conservancy, which manages the preserve, to address the impact of the fire and consider preventative measures as necessary, Palomar College said.

An aggressive response by fire crews stopped the spread of a fast-moving vegetation fire in San Marcos on Thursday afternoon, after it charred 40 acres and kicked up a huge plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.
The fire was first reported around 1 p.m. in brush on the grounds of Palomar College and had reached 40 acres by 1:45 p.m. It ran up a hill to the east, but within a half-hour crews had stopped the growth and quelled the threat to nearby homes.
