Eliud Kipchoge wins NN Mission Marathon in final race before Tokyo Olympics

The race took place at Twente Airport in the Netherlands
Eliud Kipchoge won the NN Mission Marathon in his final race before he defends his title at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Kenyan, 36, clocked two hours, four minutes and 30 seconds in his first outing since his shock defeat at last year s London Marathon.
Compatriot Jonathan Korir was second, two minutes and 10 seconds back, with Eritrea s Goitom Kifle third.
The invitation-only race took place at Twente Airport in the Netherlands.
It was originally due to take place in Hamburg on 11 April, but local Covid-19 restrictions meant it could not be staged in the German city.

The 36-year-old Kenyan - who ran the world s first sub-two hour marathon at an unofficial event in October 2019 - was speaking ahead of his comeback at Sunday s NN Mission Marathon at Twente Airport in Enschede, Netherlands.

“Sunday, personally, I will be running a very beautiful race,” he said in a pre-race press conference. “I call it beautiful because we are in need and tough times during the pandemic. “I want to run a beautiful race to show the world that actually we are on a huge, huge transition towards a great future.”
