Even with their unparalleled squad depth, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi is of the view the absence of Denis Onyango, Mosa Lebusa and Lebohang Maboe made things difficult for them in their shock Nedbank Cup semifinal defeat to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Tshakhuma dumped defending champions Sundowns out of the Nedbank Cup via a 6-5 penalty shootout win at Loftus Versfeld Stadium over the weekend. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 after extra time.
TTM goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who was brilliant all match long, saved Hlompho Kekana’s spot-kick to send the side to the final, where they’ll face fellow first-time finalists and league strugglers Chippa United at the Free State Stadium on May 8.
Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has pointed out just how important their top-of-the-table clash with AmaZulu is as they look to maintain their unbeaten league run.
Sundowns are on the road to Jonsson Kings Park on Wednesday to face what now stands as a litmus test, with AmaZulu enjoying their best form ever in the league after winning their last six consecutive league games.
That remarkable run of form has elevated Usuthu to second position on the DStv Premiership table, where they trail The Brazilians by just six points.
The reigning league champions now need 19 points from the 30 left to play to seal their fourth title on the trot, with Wednesday’s game coming after they were surprisingly knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by top flight rookies Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

New signing George Lebese is edging closer to making his debut after impressing the technical team at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Lebese has joined TTM on a short-term deal after terminating his contract with USL championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks due to Covid-19 travel restrictions in the United States.
The 32-year-old midfielder last played in South Africa for Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was also loaned to SuperSport United, before moving to America in 2019.
TTM co-coach Mpho Maleka says Lebese is working hard at training and could officially appear in the team s colours very soon. He is working very hard and doing extra training. We are still assessing him but I am sure in a week s time he will be ready to play, Maleka tells

Mamelodi Sundowns will today match a record currently held by Kaizer Chiefs as the longest ever start to a PSL season without defeat, if they hold off Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Downs are yet to lose in the opening 18 league games and if they avoid defeat this afternoon will join Kaizer Chiefs in having the longest ever unbeaten start to a season.
Chiefs cruised to a 19-game start without losing in the 2014/15 season under then coach Stuart Baxter, on their way to being crowned champions in a season that saw them taste only three defeats from 30 games.
