clintons. and i think that that works in their favor. i will say though that if you ve got a sort of succession of stories about the e-mails, about the content that s in there and questions about impropriety or at least about appearances, that s the kientd of thing that eventually could take its toll further on her approval rating. and that s the danger here. what is so striking is republicans have focused almost entirely on character here. you know their campaign against her in the first couple months is almost wholly focused on character and ethics. the trust question is important. it s something voters cast their vote upon if they can trust this person if they re going to execute the office in a way they think is all right. transparency is also an issue. the wall street journal has a story today questioning the transparency at the state department making the case effectively that the at the very top levels of the state department including hillary clinton s chief of staff were
monmouth university, new jersey residents poll. approval of governor christie in december, 65% approved of the job he s doing. that s now down to 59%. it s only a six-point drop. not that bad. look at this. you have a favorable impression of governor christie. a year or so ago, 70% said yes. down to 44% now. that s a pretty significant slip. yeah. it s a very significant slip. and i m sure it s troubling for the governor s staff. if you look more at these polls within the state of new jersey, a couple other numbers pop out. only half of the about half of the people say he s not being completely honest about all of these controversies, which goes to the very important trust question. any leader has to have the trust of the people he s going to lead. and only 44% believe, and this is people in the state of new jersey who watch him every day, paying close attention to this. only oh 44% believe that he has the right temperament to be
one branch of government for a couple of years now. they just don t have a lot to show for it. let s talk about the executive branch which you control. back in 1964, we looked it up, a pew study, 76% of the american people believed that most of the time almost always the federal government did the right thing. now it s down to less than 20%. the trust question. the commitments you made before the rollout with health care. what is it? it s a serial decline, mr. president. it keeps going down. what s going to stop it, arrest that decline? of you being honest, anybody who s president, there s skepticism out there. the cynicism and skepticism is deep. and i distinguish between, you know, just management of government and the basic blocking and tackling of getting stuff done to help the american people. and then the ability to move big policy changes that are going to
