The Southeast Iowa Super Conference track meet in Wayland last night saw two divisions collide and plenty of area athletes being crowned conference champions.
While the north and south divisions both competed, the results were divided up separately and Highland had the best area girls finish in third out of nine with 80 points while Pekin won the north with 195. The Huskies had six top three finishes led by freshman Sarah Burton winning the north division long jump in 16’0.5’’. WACO found success in the south division also placing third out of seven with 79.5 points and West Burlington won with 212. Molly McLaughlin was a champ in the 100m hurdles (17.31) and was also apart of the victorious shuttle hurdle relay team (1:14). Winfield-Mt finished sixth in the north division team standings (67), Columbus seventh (31), Lone Tree eighth (26), and Hillcrest Academy ninth (6). Other individual champions included Winfield-Mt. Columbus Community was able to avoid inclement weather last night and still hold their mini track meet where three other schools made the trip.
The Wildcat boys finished second out of four with 133 points and Wapello won it all with 146. Seven events claimed gold including Kaden Amigon in the 200m (24.20), Freddy Vergara in the 800m (2:11), Triston Miller in the 110m hurdles (16.87), Isaac Acosta in the 1600m (4:59) and 3200m (10:47), Mason Hodges in the discus (133’7’’), and the 4x800m relay of Mason Hills-Carrier, Damian Vergara, Tim Hills-Carrier, and Tyler Humiston (9:43).
The Columbus girls tallied 38 points to place fourth and Wilton grabbed the title with 115. Averi Sipes nabbed the top spot in the 3000m (14:19), Libby White won the discus (90’5’’), and Michelle Diaz was first in the shot put (34’11’’).
For the first time since 2017, the Columbus Community boys enjoyed a victory lap around the track on Thursday when they won the Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mt. Union.
The Wildcats recorded 102 points on the evening to best second place New London with 96. A total of 17 Wildcats contributed to the scoring including two champions in Triston Miller with the 110m hurdles (16.98) and Mason Hodges in the discus (138’3’’). Runner-up events included 3200m run for Freddy Vergara (10:41), Kaden Amigon for long jump (19’2.5’’), and the 4x800m relay (9:32). Wildcat Head Coach Scott Dennler was ecstatic for his team to get their first crown in four years. “They took their victory lap and they were so happy. They have finished second three times, so to get over the hump and win was awesome. I was really happy for everyone especially our seniors, who have been grinding for six years. It was great to see.”
Two area wrestling squads made a trip to New London last night for a triangular meet.
Columbus Community split a pair of duals by defeating Washington 57-15, but being edged by the host Tigers 38-36. The Wildcats took three of five contested matches from the Demons with wins from Ty Scorpil at 106 lbs by fall in 56 seconds, Triston Miller at 126 lbs by fall in 1:56, and Gerardo Orozco at 160 lbs by a 6-3 decision. In the dual against New London, Columbus was victorious in two of eight matches with Ty Scorpil having another pin in exactly 56 seconds and Will Hotz winning by fall at 170 lbs in 1:48.
