An old mask allegedly unearthed in Marshall County has piqued the interest of state archaeologists and the owner is looking for answers.
Approximately five years ago, longtime antique collector and researcher Frank Waite discovered a mysterious mask at Iowa River Antiques in Marshalltown.
“At first I wasn’t sure what it was,” Waite said. “I picked it up and it was really dense and heavy, like lead or something. Just really dense metal for the size of it.”
A total of 195 trees will be donated in Marshalltown this week.
Riverview Park and the Marshalltown Little League Park received 65 trees from the Marshalltown High School Bobcat Alumni Fund on Wednesday.
The remaining 130 trees will be donated to JBS employees this Friday and available for pick-up on Saturday. JBS Marshalltown, in partnership with MHS Bobcat Alumni Fund, are providing 130 trees to JBS employees who lost trees on their private property during the 2018 tornado and 2020 derecho. Bi-lingual planting instructions will be provided with each tree. JBS Plant Manager Todd Carl will receive a “Foliage Hall of Fame” plaque in recognition of the company’s platinum level donation.

GMG junior Abe Dieleman worked among 13 fellow Iowa high schoolers who were accepted into the legislative page program.
Selected for academic achievement and ambition for politics, Dielemen, along with other legislative pages, assist politicians and staff at the Iowa House during the legislative session.
Dieleman said politics have interested him for a long time, attending school board meetings since the third grade with his father who serves on the GMG School Board.

Ground has broken on MARSHALLTOWN’s 60,000-square-foot addition of manufacturing space.
The construction tools and equipment manufacturer celebrated the expansion with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.
“The last 12 months have been interesting I’ll say,” MARSHALLTOWN Director of Marketing John Vance said while opening the ceremony. “There’s been new and unique challenges at every turn, but MARSHALLTOWN chose to lean in; lean in and not make excuses.”
Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the significance of the expansion.

U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) met with the owner of aSPArations Salon and Day Spa in Marshalltown to talk policy and issues surrounding the small business community.
Hinson asked owner Tasha Schnathorst questions about how her business has worked to return after closure and how they recovered when Marshalltown was hit with natural disasters.
Schnathorst’s business survived an eight-week shutdown amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and said she has managed to bounce back from the added effects of the 2018 tornado and 2020 derecho.
She said the salon is fortunate to have already doubled its sales from last year.
