9 Trying to count your years as a military spouse is kind of like counting in dog years. The time seems like a normal passage, but the toll of military-specific events during that time actually compounds the span, making it seem like it’s actually longer than it really is, hence the dog year comparison. For the record, I am presently 497 years-old using this measure. But, I digress…
The event that prompted me to count this way is everyone’s favorite part of military life: The Permanent Change of Station Move. The PCS is, possibly, the primary fear of many of military families, outside of war.
William âBillâ Jones was more than a beloved school bus driver for the Killeen Independent School District. Jones, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, served two tours in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. He drove trucks commercially for decades before joining KISD as a bus driver. And, he had a family.
Jones, 75, was found dead at Cedar Gap Park in Harker Heights last fall from a gunshot wound to the chest less than 24 hours after he was fired from KISD following an accident involving a child and a Ford F-150 on the first day of in-person school, Aug. 31.
Jones was driving the school bus that day, when police said he failed to activate the flashing warning lights and equipment during a bus stop. When a child got off the bus, and then crossed the street, he was hit by the passing pickup, causing serious injury to the student.

1300 veterans are set to receive their COVID-19 vaccine at the Twin Ports VA Clinic in Superior this weekend.
The vaccination event kicked off on Saturday with hundreds of veterans receiving their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
One of these veterans was Joe Kilen of Two Harbors, who served in the United States Army for three years. I went in, in 69 and got out in 71 and served Germany and Vietnam,” Kilen said.
Kilen said the shot was quick and easy.
“Nothing to be afraid of. It was quick and easy and it’s better for everybody. We ve got to get this taken care of,” Kilen said.
