high-quality hand-crafted chef prepared meals. we have been on the ground for six days, we have been feeding for five. we know that these folks just need encouragement and hope and mercy chefs is providing that in the form of a beautiful meal. anita: and i know that you ve been in the restaurant industry for many years so tell us about what is it like to bring high-quality, restaurant-style meals to a massive amount of people, what is that operation like? we see pictures of volunteers handing out food. what is that massive undertaken like? well, it s a huge catering operation off-site. we have to bring in the kitchens, we have to bring in our own power and filter our own water. getting deliveries, our groceries come on tractor trailer trucks and our chefs are working from 4:00 in the morning and some of them don t get out
about close calls that have happened in this area, and we are learning about tractor trailer trucks that have had pretty close calls. when these roads are designed, safety has to be the number one concern and with this investigation, i am particularly interested in looking at the road configuration, because it was changed not too long ago so i am curious as to what the previous configuration was, and there are roads that are being redesigned right now in the amsterdam area, and there are there have been advancements in traffic control devices, and a number of other things that perhaps can be done here, and certainly it has to be part of the investigation and the details of that may be what we just heard is that maybe the road needs to be redesigned or safety features do need to be added, but certainly with this type of accident, it s raising a lot of questions as you heard about the limousine industry, but also the road design itself
support the military is not in charge, as they have been, they are in support of civilian authorities. now to your second question about logistics. it has been a tremendous challenge. it has been a tremendous challenge because this is not a disaster on the u.s. mainland where we can send in tractor trailer trucks and helicopters right away. we are having to ship that across the ocean to puerto rico and the virgin islands and we are flying supplies in as fast as we possibly can. the initial aftermath we are still dealing with several logistical challenges at the airport because the air traffic control system has been down and it s causing a limited number of flights to get in. i am pleased to report that we are and have now opened two additional airports for relief operations. roosevelt roads and aqua diaw. again, to the efforts to opening
the border. what are you seeing? it s been quite a day so far. quite a day, wolf. and a lot of treacherous conditions along the i-95 corridor. right now it s a bit of a lull in the storm. we just got hit with a little bit of freezing rain. we re in northeastern maryland near the delaware line heading towards philadelphia and the delaware memorial bridge. but there are treacherous conditions along the i-95 corridor both on i-95 and west of here. we just got word of a four-vehicle accident including two overturned tractor-trailer trucks westbound on the pennsylvania turnpike. that s a long way west of here, but that involved four vehicles in a 65-mile stretch of the pennsylvania turnpike is closed down, we re told on the westbound side, because of that accident. we came upon earlier today two tractor-trailers overturned right on the d.c. beltway because of the snow and ice and that had affected them. i talked to one of the drivers, he didn t want to go on camera, but he said the steeri
accidents that involve overturned tractor-trailer trucks in the washington, d.c. area right along 495 there with the beltway of washington. these trucks are almost identical and they flipped over and neither of the two were hurt badly. one suffered minor injuries and had to be rescued from the vehicle. overnight into today in virginia alone they reported some 800 accidents. again, very treacherous conditions and there has been a bull as you have been reporting midday of just rain and maybe even a stoppage of the conditions in some areas. they are expecting the second punch in philadelphia and also back and the second punch of snow. two to three inches today. those conditions. just south of washington, the conditions are bad along i-95.
