Apapa gridlock: Truckers raise alarm over police, NPA conspiracy to scuttle E-Call up system operation

Aggrieved members of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, have accused the police authority and officials of Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, of frustrating the smooth operation of the newly introduced Electronic Call-Up system in Apapa ports.
This came as men of the Lagos Special Traffic Management and Enforcement Compliance Team set up by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to unlock the Apapa griclock, has been rendered ineffective following, flagrant disobedience by truckers to rules of engagement aimed to restore sanity.

General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, Olajide Oduyoye, in this interview, speaks on the traffic gridlock in Lagos and various challenges associated with traffic management.
How have you been managing the traffic situation in Lagos?
I was sworn in as the General Manager of LASTMA in 2019. Incidentally, the job of LASTMA is to ensure the free flow of traffic in Lagos State. It behooves the leader of the agency to ensure the free flow of traffic.
This is achievable mainly because the state government ensures that LASTMA officers are paid hazard allowances. This goes a long way to convince the officers that government is interested in their welfare. The state government ensures that an insurance policy is in place to cater to the officers where applicable, especially when we record injuries or death.

An emergency stakeholders’ meeting between representatives of Lagos State Government and union leaders in ports operation has ended in a deadlock.
This happened as the chaotic traffic situation for the four days running, on Thursday, along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway was totally shut down as truckers and tankers parked indiscriminately on the road causing untold hardship to motorists, commuters and businesses in the area.
