In 2018 I drafted a few petitioners articles, and while I am excited to see some of the initiatives start to take place in our community such as the Town Seal and Indigenous People’s Day, we still do not have the Youth Commission. Currently, we have amazing groups for our young people such as National Honors Society, Student Council, Keystone and Torch Club, yet we do not have a town board for our young people. In 2009 I helped establish the Mashpee Wampanoag Youth Council to give our tribal youth a voice in tribal government, so I decided to draft the petitioner’s article to establish the Town Of Mashpee Youth Commission. In my research I discovered that the Town Charter speaks of a youth commission that could be established, so the question is, Why has it taken so long? We need to invest in our young people to make them successful, as they are the future elected officials, volunteers, teachers and more.
