floor. there are those on the hard right over in the house who think they can bully their colleagues and the house and the country into a shutdown. amazingly, this band of hard right extremists actually say a shutdown would be a good thing. this shows you that the hard right is not serious about governing. the only tactic in their playbook is to try and bully the rest of congress and the country to bend to their extremist views. so it takes compromise to get anything done in these conditions of divided government. a top line agreement we reached last week has borne that out. i think there s a lot of tap dancing right now. i think a deal is going to get done. yeah, of course, but can i tell you that that reuters front page, or that reuters poll where they say senate dems, don t worry, we are going to have a stopgap in place while
the pressure is on house speaker mike johnson to keep the government running while keeping the far right of his conference happy. our top line agreement remains. we are getting our next steps together. johnson, who has been speaker for just 80 days, being asked by hardliners to back off his deal with democrats for a $1.6 trillion budget. i vehemently opposed it, publicly and privately. it s basically the same deal that took down johnson s predecessor, kevin mccarthy, last fall. are you worried that one of these guys is going to make a move on you? no, i m not worried at all. in the senate, leaders of both sides already gave up by making a deal by next week s deadline and plan to pass another continuing resolution. you know, the senate the simplest things take a week in the senate. reihan, now that mike johnson has said i m going to ignore the hardliner, i m going to stick to the deal i made with chuck schumer and the democrats in the
hard concessions to cut more billions, as you know, from the irs give away and the covid-era splush funds. it replacess gimmicks from the prior agreement and it brings congress much closer to regular order, which is our big commitment here. in keeping with my commitment to bring members into the legislative process, i have received feedback from many members across the republican conference. that s an important part of this. i committed to decentralizing the speaker s office and making this a member-driven process. our top line agreement remains. we are getting next steps together and, woing tord a robust appropriations process. so stay tuned for all that to develop. just giving a speech. i missed the top, but what we herd from mike johnson when he
