Longtime Nelson County Board of Supervisors member Tommy Harvey is seeking another term, running as an independent and hoping to hold onto the North District seat he has held since 1984.
Heâs being challenged by Afton resident and former Nelson County School Board member Mary Cunningham, who has announced her intention to run for supervisor as a Democrat.
In an interview, Harvey said there was âno decision to it,â and he wants to see the North District do well. Harvey, said he and the board routinely have leaned on his past knowledge and experience.
âWhen you look at our board right now, youâve got two members that have less than two yearsâ experience. Then youâve got the other two members who have four yearsâ experience,â Harvey said.

Local officials are exploring investing in a new agriculture complex that would serve both Amherst and Nelson counties.
Chris Bryant, a member of the Amherst County Agriculture Committee, presented the idea of a joint venture between the two counties during the Nelson County Board of Supervisorsâ Jan. 12 meeting. With the greenlight from supervisors following the presentation, the committee can begin working with local government in both counties to move forward with the initial stages of the project.
The Nelson board has joined Amherst County in funding a feasibility study of the project. No dollar amounts were discussed at the Nelson meeting.
