State Legislature honors Casperson | News, Sports, Jobs

May 5, 2021 Daily News (Escanaba) file photo Former Sen. Tom Casperson, who died of cancer in November, was memorized last week by the state Legislature. LANSING The state Legislature last week adopted a concurrent resolution memorializing former Sen. Tom Casperson, who died from cancer in November. “Tom Casperson was my mentor, friend and a brother in Christ,” state Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Waucedah Township, who succeeded Casperson representing the 38th Senate District, said in a news release. “We shared a passion for the Upper Peninsula, for Michigan, and for the country. We both believed in the people of the U.P. and their desire to work against an intrusive government, and even worse, any mindset that views the U.P. and its people as subservient to the whims and pleasures of people who live in other places. And we loved the Green Bay Packers.”

Deadline Detroit | Selweski: Michigan Legislature's transparency bills are a fraud. Supporters say 'better than nothing.'

by  Chad Selweski Michigan s Legislature seems determined to retain the state s status as the least transparent, least ethical public body in the nation.  The latest sleight of hand in Lansing is an effort by Republican leaders -– and some leading reformers on the left to bastardize legislation that would have ended a key proviso of state government secrecy.  Clear skies over a murky workplace (Photo: Nancy Derringer) Michigan remains one of only two states that don’t require state lawmakers to disclose their finances – business ownerships or partnerships, real estate, stocks – which would reveal legislators’ conflicts of interest.  A previous bill to require full public disclosure of income and assets has been twisted into a secretive system where only a small committee of lawmakers could see the financial records that would be submitted by fellow legislators.
