With the primary income tax deadline delayed until mid-May, there was only a one-month gap between that date and the June 15 deadline for quarterly estimated income tax.
I couldn’t sleep Sunday, and in the accompanying wee-hours mental reckoning I came upon one of the reasons.

Combining all leased and independent operator clients of ATBS, average earnings for the first quarter were $16,481, or 67.7 cents per mile. At that pace, the year’s average for the group would total almost $66,000. For flatbedders it d be $73K-plus.
What’s happening, he said,
is that drivers are looking at the fact that they can make $70,000 “and stay home a little more.”
The result is a tightening of capacity. Parker said utilization in the first quarter at Covenant was three or four percentage points less than it would have as a result of that development. “
