THE Conservatives seem likely to continue leading Bolton Council after they became the largest party after the local elections. They won three more seats and lost one and now have 20 councillors of the borough’s 60. Labour also gained a councillor and held on to the seven seats they were defending and now have a total of 19 councillors. There were 21 seats fought for on Thursday in 20 wards across Bolton, with 99 candidates standing. The results were announced after a lengthy counting process at the University of Bolton stadium with counting and verification starting at 9am and the last result announced after 6pm.
Beer Garden A SHOP selling alcohol until 11pm has been granted a licence despite objections from licensing enforcement and ward councillors. A Bolton Council licensing panel least week heard representations regarding The Beer Garden, on St Helens Road, with an original request to sell booze until 5am. The applicant, David Nield advised the panel that he now wished to change that to a midnight closing. Prior to the meeting, all parties had been shown video footage relating to anti-social behaviour in the vicinity of the premises, which had been put forward by a council licensing enforcement officer. That officer referred to anti-social behaviour problems in the area with the use of nitrous oxide by youths and alcohol related disorder and felt there was the potential for this to escalate if this premises was granted a licence.
Beer Garden AN application for a 21-hours per day alcohol licence for a new shop has received objections saying the area is already blighted by youngsters inhaling laughing gas and other incidents of violent and anti-social behaviour. Bolton Council’s licensing committee will deliberate next week on a premises licence for a shop called The Beer Garden on St Helens Road from David Neild. The premises used to trade as St Helens Wines before that business lost its licence last year. Papers lodged ahead of the a hearing in front of a licensing panel on April 20 state the licence is sought for The Beer Garden, described as a ‘ a small mini-market and grocery store with an off licence situated on an arterial road 1.5 miles south west of Bolton town centre’.

Best One in Morris Lane A SHOP faces losing its licence after it sold illegal tobacco to a covert surveillance officer. A review for Morris Mini Mart Ltd, trading as Best One, in Morris Green Lane, is set to be held following the finds. The Surveillance Group Ltd undertakes work gathering intelligence and conducting test purchases on behalf of international tobacco manufacturer JTI. On August 7 last year, a member of their team was sold hand rolling tobacco for £17 at the Best One store. Tests showed though it was made by JTI, the tobacco was meant for the Belgium domestic market and not the UK’s.
