Letter to the Editor: Park rangers should be allowed to enforce laws

Letter to the Editor: Park rangers should be allowed to enforce laws Share In 2020, over three million people visited Maine state parks. By statute, Maine Bureau of Parks can train and designate rangers to enforce state laws. Yet, the bureau does not allow them to detain, summons or arrest. Of the 41 who attended last year’s Ranger Academy, none have received the power to enforce laws. Respected Rep. Thomas Skolfield has introduced L.D. 657, “An Act to Clarify the Law Enforcement Powers of the Bureau of Parks and Lands.” This resolve requires the bureau to designate rangers with the ability to protect visitors and the state’s natural resources.

Tim Caverly to share scenic, historic photos of married life in the Maine woods

Tim Caverly. (Photo courtesy Rockland Public Library) The Rockland Public Library presents author Tim Caverly, Thursday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m., on Zoom. This event is free and open to all. As children in Baxter State Park, Tim and Susan Caverly both hiked the trails up and over Mt. Katahdin. However, the two never met until college. On February 11, Tim will share scenic and historic photos illustrating the couple’s life together in the Maine woods in this heartwarming Valentine’s Day event. A former Maine Park Ranger, Tim Caverly has written ten books about Maine. His work has appeared in the Bangor Daily News and he has a monthly column in The Maine Sportsman. Tim and his wife are graduates of the University of Maine at Machias. They live in Millinocket.
