How Americans are reacting to George Floyd's death one year later

May 25, 2021 4:56 PM EDT On the evening of May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police detained George Floyd for allegedly using counterfeit money in a convenience store. Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, killing the 46-year-old Black man. Floyd’s killing, and the nationwide demonstrations that followed, brought the issues of race, policing and civil rights to the forefront of the American conversation. Nearly a year later, a jury found Chauvin guilty of murder. The other three former police officers who were at the scene will face trial later this year. On the anniversary of Floyd’s death, how do Americans view the nation’s progress on race and policing? Has there been noticeable change? What’s next? To get answers to these questions, PBS NewsHour reporters and producers traveled in recent months across the Midwest, from Minnesota’s Twin Cities to Ferguson, Missouri, East St. Louis, Illinois and Louisville, Ke

Junior Players Fights for Racial Equality Through Fashion Dreams

Cruz says the event will focus on racial inequity, social justice barriers and the national climate. They found a local partner in the Crow Collection of Asian Art and will use eco-friendly and sustainable fashion from three local designers. Junior Players is the longest running youth arts education program in Dallas, and reaching historically marginalized communities in North Texas is an important part if not the most important part of their mission. A show like Discover Runway Dreams was a natural addition to their program. “With this show, the idea was representation from a casting perspective,” Cruz says. “We want to make sure that we’re allowing everyone who wants to participate the chance to audition. We had to really make sure to include every ZIP code in North Texas, for all ages and all different gender identifications, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds. We took all that into consideration to create a diverse ensemble for our production.”

Walker selected for Missouri Agribusiness Academy

Walker selected for Missouri Agribusiness Academy Chillicothe News Claire Walker, Chillicothe, was one of 30 high school sophomores recently selected to participate in the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Missouri Agribusiness Academy (MAbA). Walker and the other students selected will spend several days in June in the Mid-Missouri area learning about many of the unique opportunities available in agriculture. “Giving back to agriculture is important and we’re thrilled to contribute to the future of agriculture through MAbA,” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “I’m so proud of each of these students and the accomplishments they’ve already achieved as leaders. We hope that MAbA helps each of them add value to those skills and ultimately find their future in an agriculture career.”

Things to Do in Miami: O, Miami Poetry Festival 2021

Every April, during National Poetry Month, O, Miami sets out on a mission to expose locals to poetry in unique and sometimes extravagant ways. Past activations have included prose painted on rooftops of warehouses in Allapattah directly beneath the flight path to Miami International Airport and secretly sewing clothing tags containing poetry into garments found at thrift stores. Last year put a damper on the festival s goal when the pandemic forced a shift to a virtual format. “Like most other arts orgs, we ve incorporated digital platforms into our everyday programming, which is reflected in the makeup of this year s festival,” says founder and director P. Scott Cunningham. “We have a number of online workshops that people can participate in from home, in addition to some readings. All of our in-person programs are socially distant and do not encourage large gatherings.”
