Nearly one year after the tragic Fairmount fire that killed 12 people, including 9 children, the U.S. will mandate 10-year, tamper-resistant smoke alarms in public housing units. The measure, introduced by Sen. Bob Casey and Rep. Madeleine Dean, was included in the $1.7 trillion government spending bill signed into law by President Joe Biden on Thursday.
The Maryland Board of Pilots, which licenses and regulates the pilots serving the Port of Baltimore, did not have a cellphone policy in March when the Ever Forward was grounded, nor has it adopted one since, but the topic will be considered soon, officials say.
