position to end this rolling struggle. when exactly that end will be is still a bit of a question mark. meantime, members of congress are questioning past bailouts to airlines and considering attaching strings for future help that may be coming their way. members on the house transportation committee have promised to investigate this and the commerce committee are proposing rules that would ensure customers are promptly paid if things like this ever happen, anita. anita: that sounds good, and i seem to remember southwest airlines got a lot of money from the bailout. jacqui heinrich live in st. croix. thank you, jacqui. you know, gillian, it s really nice that southwest is trying to make sure people get ticket refunds, meal refunds, taking care of the best they can, but you have to wonder what does the board of southwest, the southwest board, what are they going to say about this and what s going to happen to the ceo? gillian: i don t know, i would also venture it s not a
99% of the time but we need to double down on our already existing plans to upgrade system for these extreme circumstances so we never again face what s happening right now. this morning nationwide 2700 domestic flights were canceled and 90% of those were southwest. 2500. people buying tickets on other airlines. places like chicago and dallas where southwest operates out of a different airport they land and don t have their cars. people are stuck and frills traited. i have been dealing with this since christmas eve. my flight got canceled at 12:00 in the morning while we were on the plane. we waited in line for an hour and a half and get to the front of the line and tell us there are no flights anywhere until the end of the year. it s a southwest issue. we ve been very loyal to southwest. their system did not work this time. the department of transportation says southwest will be held accountable in terms of ticket refunds, hotel
neglected to upgrade communication logistics technology resulting in this meltdown. both southwest flight attendants and pilots unions says this was predictable. bob jordan offered an apology. the tools that we use to recover from disruption serve us well 99% of the team. clearly we need to double down on our existing plans to upgrade systems for these extreme circumstances so we never again face what is happening right now. the u.s. department of transportation says particularly when it comes to ticket refunds, hotel vouchers, meal vouchers, which are going to add up, that southwest airlines will be held accountable. edward? thanks, mike. the biden administration is vowing to hold southwest accountable. that s little comfort to some travelers who have now been stranded for days.
